How to get diagnosed for mental health problems
GPs can diagnose different mental health problems such as depression or anxiety. If you are at all concerned about your mental health your GP should be the first point of contact. For more complex mental health problems, your GP may refer you to a specialist, for example a psychiatrist. Your GP will also be able to refer you for counselling, support groups, and provide information on self-help.
To diagnose a mental health problem, doctors ask you about your experiences, feelings, behaviours and physical symptoms; how long you’ve been experiencing these symptoms and feelings; and the impact they are having on your life. Doctors will then base their diagnosis on what you tell them.
Many people avoid seeking medical help in fear of stigma attached to having a diagnosis, however receiving a diagnosis should be viewed as a positive thing – it enables you to receive treatment and help you need as well as understand the reasons behind your symptoms.
